JSON mode (OpenAI's `response_format=json_object` or `json_schema`, Anthropic's tool-use schemas) tells the model to produce valid JSON. The provider does this by constraining the decoder so that at each step it can only emit tokens that keep the output on a valid path through JSON syntax. The benefit is reliability: you stop seeing trailing commas, unterminated strings, and mid-sentence cutoffs that break the downstream parser. The tradeoff is that the constraint narrows the space of things the model can say next. On tasks where free-form prose was helping (the model was effectively thinking out loud before committing to an answer), forcing it to start with `{` immediately strips that space away. Empirically this costs 5-15 quality points on reasoning-heavy tasks. The rule of thumb is simple. JSON mode is a win for structured extraction and routine field-filling. It is a tax on tasks where reasoning matters. Knowing which you have decides whether to turn it on for that route.

The tradeoff is reliability for reasoning space. JSON mode constrains the decoder so only schema-valid tokens can be sampled at each step. This eliminates the ~5-10% malformed-JSON rate that prompt-only JSON suffers in production, which matters when the downstream parser is strict. The cost is that the model's natural thinking out loud pattern, where intermediate prose anchors the final answer, gets compressed out. On reasoning-heavy tasks the published numbers show a 5-15 point quality drop. The decision rule maps to task structure. Pure extraction (entities, classifications, field lookups) loses nothing from JSON mode because there was no reasoning to compress. Reasoning tasks that happen to end in a JSON answer lose meaningfully. Open-ended generation embedded in a string field (a summary, an analysis) loses on the prose quality even when the surrounding structure is simple. The production pattern when you need both reasoning and structure is to split the call. One call does free-form reasoning. A second call structures the result into JSON mode. Cost doubles but quality holds. The alternative inside a single call is a sectioned prompt. Use `<reasoning>...</reasoning>` followed by `<answer>...</answer>`, then parse the answer block. This is cheaper than two calls and preserves most of the reasoning quality at the cost of slightly looser JSON guarantees on the answer portion. The wrong move is to enable JSON mode globally as a default. The right move is to enable it per route, after measuring the actual quality delta on that route's golden set.
